Ponniyin selven book summary in English
The story revolves around a beautiful and charming Taruna, who is the messenger of Prince Aditya Karikalan. He travels to the Chola country to deliver Prince Aditya Karikalan's message to the king and princess. The story follows a plot by a petty general to bring back Arulmozhi (as the king was called before his accession) with the aim of restoring political peace to the country in view of the unrest he has caused and the threat of civil war. Sister Kundwai. relating to the efforts made.
Parantaka Chola's second son Gandaraditya was installed on the throne as his first son Rajaditya died in battle. At the time of Gandaraditya's death, his son Madurantaka was young, so his brother Arinjaya was succeeded. After Arinjay's death, his son Parantaka II, Sundar Chola, was installed on the throne. They have two sons, Aditya Karikalan and Arulmozhi Varman and a daughter, Kundavai.
At the very beginning of the story, Emperor Sundara Chola is shown sick and bedridden. Aditya Karikalan is the general of the Northern Command and lives in Kanchi and Arulmozhivarman (who later became famous as Raja Raja Chola) is fighting in Sri Lanka and his sister Kundavai Piratti lives in the house of the Chola king at Pazhairai.
The story begins when rumors spread that a conspiracy was hatched against Sundar Chola and his sons. One person who gets a glimpse of the Pandya conspiracy is Vallavarayana Vandiyathevan, a warrior of the Vana clan. Although the title of the book is Poniyin Selvan, the protagonist of the book is Vandiyathevan who is a friend of Aditya Karikalan.
It is through Vanditevan that we meet characters in the novel such as Arulmozhivarman, the beloved prince of all, and Periya Pazhvetturair, the chancellor who marries Nandini at the age of sixty. Aditya Karikalan loved Nandini in her youth, but after Veerapandiya (who was probably her father) was killed by Aditya Karikalan, she took revenge and vowed to destroy the Chola dynasty. We also meet Kundavai Devi who on hearing of the plot sends Vandiathevan to Sri Lanka with a message for Arulmozhivarman to return immediately.
Apart from this, there are other characters like Madurantaka Thevar (who wants to be king), son of Gandaraditya and Aniruddha Brahmarayar, Sundar Cholar's prime minister and the man with eyes and ears everywhere. But the book's most notable character is Brahmarayar's spy Azwarkadia Nambi, a Vaishnava who travels the country challenging the Shaivas to a debate. He collects information for the Prime Minister and is around Vandiathevan to rescue him in times of trouble.
There are also some beautiful women like Vanathi, the princess of Kodambalur who falls in love with Arulmozhi; The boat carrying the future king to Sri Lanka was punctuated by a woman; Mandakini, the mute and deaf stepmother, and Rachamal, the sailor's wife who supports the Pandavas' machinations. The most memorable of these is Nandini, who is said to have the power to charm any man with her beauty.
With Punkuzali's help, Vandiyathevan reaches Sri Lanka, meets Arulmozhivarman and becomes his close friend. In Sri Lanka, Arulmozhivarman learns that his father spent some time with a girl who was born deaf on an island near Sri Lanka. He meets her and learns from her painting that the girl and their father have two children. Who are these children and are they fit for the throne? Later one day in the Thirupurambayam forest, Vandiathevan sees Nandini and the Pandya conspirators enthrone a small boy and all swear an oath before him. Who is this boy and what right does he have to sit on the throne?
On his way back from Sri Lanka, Arulmozhivarman gets caught in a cyclone and goes missing. A rumor spread that he was dead, but he turned out to be alive and living in a Buddhist monastery called Chudamani Viharam in Nagapattinam. Then slowly the disunited family begins to unify. Meanwhile, the conspirators choose a day on which both the king and his sons will be killed.
Will the conspirators succeed in killing Sundar Chola and enthronement Madhuranthaka as king or will Arulmozhivarman be crowned? This is a major question that the story revolves around. The book ends with a dramatic climax in the fifth chapter where the truth about Madhuranthaka Chola is revealed.
